Beauty Products: Save V. Splurge

It ain’t no lie, being a lady is expensive!

From the outfits to the maintenance to the beauty products, you can easily go overboard on your beauty budget. I can’t even tell you how many times a quick trip to Ulta for a few “must-haves” has wound up costing me my left arm. Things start to add up and before you know it you’re begging for a good dupe-type product to replace your pricey faves.

Just like I love to mix high and low end fashion, I love to do the same with beauty products. I do all the work and then share the results with you all, so you don’t have to waste your money testing duds out. Only the best for you babes! When I need to save money on my beauty regimen here are the cost effective, but still totally effective products I shop for!

Beauty Saves V. Splurges

Save: E.L.F Poreless Primer

Splurge: Smashbox Photo Finish Pore Minimizing Primer

Primers are super important and key to adding longevity to your makeup. I never used to use primer, but I always had the problem of my foundation wearing away in certain areas on my face. I decided to give primers a try and at first I tried this pricey Smashbox primer thinking it would work best. It worked great, but I cringed every time I purchased it for almost $40. After asking myself who I thought I was spending that kind of money on a product that no one can even see, I ventured out looking for a cheaper alternative. I found this E.L.F Poreless Primer and it works just as well for a fraction of the price.  Save your pennies pretties, buy the dupe.

Save: NYX Highlight and Contour Palette

Splurge: Kat Von D Shade Light Contour Palette

When contour became the thing to do, I looked up palettes and almost cried. I was a poor college student and throwing down almost $50 on a palette was not going to happen. I would just use bronzers or darker powders that I had on hand, totally failing at the look. Eventually, I invested in a good contour palette and went for the Kat Von D Shade Light palette. I love the cool tones of the contour shades and I like how brightening all the highlight colors are – I use them to set my under eye concealer. However, when I hit pan, I shopped for a cheaper option. The NYX highlight and contour palette is great. it offers 4 contour shades and 4 highlights, 3 of which are matte, 1 has shimmer. It’s perfect for achieving the same looks as the pricey palettes without the high price tag.

Save: Sephora Retractable Brow Pencil

Splurge: Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz

I’m all about the brows, they make or break your look. After trying tons of cheapie brow pencils with no luck I bite the bullet and bought the ABH Brow Wiz pencil which is a cult favorite. It was so good, like so good, but I’d go through it quickly and then need to repurchase it like ever 3 weeks. That’s a commitment guys, it’s like having another bill to pay. But nothing else compared, until my friend who’s a Sephora makeup artist recommended the their retractable brow pencil. It’s like half the price of the ABH one and it works just as well, in fact I don’t notice a difference. The only negative is that the grooming end has a weird little comb and not a spooly brush – other than that it’s golden!

Save: L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara

Splurge: Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara

A beauty item I try to not to splurge on is mascara. I feel like there are a million drugstore mascaras and they all do the same thing as the expensive ones. I was gifted the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara and I ended up really liking it. Begrudging, I was about to repurchase when I saw L’Oreal’s Lash Paradise at Ulta. The packaging was strikingly similar, and it was less than half the price, so I decided to try it out. Well, not only is the packaging similar, the formula is similar too. It works perfectly and was the perfect price, so bye fancy mascara!

Save: NYX Lingerie Liquid Lipstick

Splurge: Stila Liquid Lipstick

By now you all know that I love the Stila Liquid Lipsticks – like I really love them! However, I can totally understand if you’re not in place mentally or financially to spend to $22 on a lipstick, especially if you want several colors and can’t choose just one. I always recommend the NYX Lingerie liquid lipsticks to girlfriends that want to try a liquid lip, but aren’t ready to commit to the prestige prices. NYX lip lingeries have a great color assortment and a lot of them are really unique shades. They are a bit more drying than the Stila lipsticks, but they’re still a great product dupe for the price.

Hopefully I’ve motivated you to get shopping for some budget friendly items? If you have any favorite save v. splurge products please leave me a comment! I’d love to hear from you!
