There is no way around it, we have good days and bad days. Bad days are unavoidable, but they we do have some control of how we let them effect our moods. You can turn a bad day around and you can even prevent a bad day from getting worse by choosing to stay positive. I used to really let less than ideal situations get me down and then I would stay down with a negative mindset. Is there anything worse than continuously wallowing in self pity?! In recent years though, I’ve learned that I can do things for myself to start my day off on the right foot and keep it going that way. These 5 tricks can help to make you happier throughout the day and keep the bad days at bay!
ONE // Get Enough Sleep, But Rise Early
You really need at least 7 hours of sleep to feel well rested in the morning. You’ve probably heard that your whole life and still pulled all nighters here and there for assignments or for fun with friends, but the truth is your body and mind will work more efficiently with some good zzz’s under your belt. I’m also a firm believer in starting your day early. I used to give myself a little over an hour to get ready for work, but I was always stressed because I was running late all the time. I started waking up earlier in 15 minute increments until I gave myself 2 hours before I needed to leave. I find I have time to ease into my morning routine and get myself ready without rushing. Starting your day relaxed is essential to being happier every day.
TWO // Make Plans That You’ll Look Forward To
This will vary depending on the day. For me this can be anything from making an appointment for a gel manicure to dinner one night during the week with a girlfriend. Either way it should be something that makes you happy when you think about it. Add the plans to your phone or planner and set a reminder for yourself, so even if life gets chaotic you won’t forget the fun plans you have waiting for you.
THREE // Accomplish Something
This is another one that is going to vary depending on the day and your lifestyle. Sometimes my accomplishment for the day is reading and replying to all the emails in my inbox. Other days, my accomplishment might be bigger, like working through a tough project at work. When I accomplish things both big and small I feel good about myself. I feel productive, successful, and confident – all incredibly important things for a woman to feel in her day to day life!
FOUR // Do Something For Your Self
Whether it be painting your nails, enjoying a cup of coffee with a book in hand, or taking 20 minutes to read a blog you like (cough To The Altar & After cough) take some time for your self. However much or little time you need, this is the one time of day it’s okay to be selfish. If it’s a tough day give yourself some extra time. I like to give myself at least half an hour. My favorite is a quick trip to Ulta for a new lipstick, if I can make it to Ulta I’ll settle for a drugstore trip. Obviously, that’s not an everyday thing, but when in need of a special pick-me-up that always does the trick. My favorite low-key and free pick-me-up is a quiet cup of tea while scrolling through my favorite IG accounts.
FIVE // Meditate
After a long day I find meditation very helpful! It helps me unwind, calm my mind, and find inner peace. Now I’m no pro, so I use guided meditations I find on YouTube. The videos do the trick though! I usually reserve these for right before bed because of how soothing I find them, but if my day is taking a turn for the worst I pull one of these out early. A good meditation session can help you feel less stressed and more focused. It’s hard to be negative after a few rounds of deep cleansing breathing – #facts!
